Sam the Seed, Rubberlegs, Foggy...who comes up with these character names?! This movie is actually closer to a real sequel to "Drunken Master" than Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master 2" is, since it brings back Sam the Seed (Simon Yuen) and has him training his adopted son Foggy (Shun-Yee Yuen) and facing off against another Drunken Fist master, Rubberlegs (Jang Lee Hwang).
The martial arts in this one is all top notch--Rubberlegs' Drunken Mantis style is way cool, and Shun-Yee Yuen shows off some impressive technique toward the end too. The humor, though, is typical low, low, low-brow stuff...and the cast is, well...let's just say the ugly convention must have been in town when they were casting this one! So if you're looking for some cute guys to drool over, definitely look elsewhere. Shun-Yee Yuen just doesn't have that compelling a screen presence so I can see why he never became a bigger star, despite his skill.
I did get a kick out of Dean Shek as Moneybags...he's one of those guys you always see playing ugly, sneaky sidekicks, bad guys and sycophants in these old school flicks, and he's really funny here.
SUMMARY:
Overall rating: B Martial arts freaks will love it. Otherwise...run away while you can!
Droolworthiness: F
Slashiness: Ummm...EW? I REALLY don't want to go there with anyone in THIS movie!
Action: B+ Lots of drunken fist, if you like that sort of thing (which I do!) Though sometimes it's a little slow, and Simon Yuen is clearly being doubled in most of the action sequences.
Do not attempt to adjust the picture. You really don't want to get a better look at these guys.
