From Beijing With Love (Guo chan Ling Ling Qi, 1994)
This one isn't slashy at all, so if that's all you're looking for, look elsewhere. However, it's still damn funny and a must-see for any James Bond fans out there. Stephen Chow plays a butcher who, once upon a time, was a top government agent. He comes out of retirement (butcher knife in hand) to track "a man with a golden gun" who has stolen bones from China's only dinosaur fossil. Think Inspector Clouseau more than Sean Connery, and throw in Anita Yuen as a double agent who can't decide whether to kiss or kill Chow, and you'll get some idea of what goes on in this film.
There are some great laugh-out-loud moments and enough bad subtitles to make your head explode ("Commander, I am glad to see you in the toilet!") Not to be missed is the scene where a wounded Stephen watches porn videos to make the blood flow to...ahem...another part of his body so that Anita can "operate" on his injured leg (with the butcher knife, of course). My only quibble is it does sometimes get overly violent and bloody for a movie that for the most part is just absurd silliness. But consistency in tone is NOT one of the stronger aspects of Hong Kong film in general, so just go with it and enjoy yourself.
SUMMARY:
Overall rating: A- A smart parody that translates well (despite baffling subtitles).
Droolworthiness: A for Scruffy!Stephen as the butcher--guh! Stephen in white suits--guh squared! Major eye candy.
Slashiness: F. Nada.
Action: C- Some action scenes but nothing particularly noteworthy. It's all played for laughs.
