God of Gamblers 2 (Dou hap, 1991)
A sequel to a Chow Yun Fat film, but considering this is instead a vehicle for Stephen Chow and Andy Lau, you don't really need to have seen the first one to enjoy this film. It goes off in its own totally wacked-out direction.
Andy is Little Knife, protege to the God of Gamblers. Stephen, who calls himself the "Saint of Gamblers", wants to get in good with Andy to learn how to use his special powers and become another protege of the GoG. Andy wants nothing to do with the ever-annoying Chow, yet when Andy is targeted by a group out for revenge against him and his master, Chow (and of course, Uncle Tat, here as always) end up being dragged into the adventure. By the end and after much insanity, Stephen and Andy are good chums who have used their gambling skills together to beat the bad guys.
It's all very silly. Gambling films aren't really my favorite, but this one--filled with typical Stephen Chow goofiness, is a lot of fun. And of course, he and Andy have some nice slashy moments (particularly one bizarre scene where they end up dancing together. Whee!)
SUMMARY:
Overall rating: A- Cute silly fun with cute silly boys. What's not to like?
Droolworthiness: A Andy and Stephen in lots of very stylish suits.
Slashiness: B+ They're not as overt about it as some slashy duos, but there is definitely a strong vibe between them that would be easy to run with.
Action: C- Stephen gets in one great scene of his classic Bruce Lee impersonation, but that's about it.
