Hero (Ma Wing Ching, 1997)
I can't say much about this film because it bored me so much, I can't remember many details about it. The film just didn't do it for me on a number of levels. I'm not a big fan of Corey Yuen Kwai as a director--especially an action director. His over-reliance on obvious wirework just annoys me. (Or maybe I'm just pissed at the craptastic job he's done on Jet Li in such films as "Romeo Must Die".) Takeshi Kaneshiro didn't move me as the leading actor and there should have been more Yuen Biao. Also this is another one of those films that suffers from too wild mood swings, fluctuating disruptively between serious gangster drama into goofy comedy.
I just had a big fat "been here, seen this before--and much better" feeling about the film. Some folks seem to like it a lot, so maybe I was just in the wrong mood when I watched it. But what I recall doesn't leave me wanting to give it a second try.
