"Rush Hour" is NOT one of Jackie Chan's best movies. So why is it in my Highly Recommended category? Because it's a great introductory film for those unfamiliar with Jackie's work--and for those more used to American action films. Jackie plays the fish-out-of-water role as a detective from China sent to help in a kidnapping case. Partnered with a loud-mouthed L.A. detective (Chris Tucker), the two work together through their initial dislike and much resistance from their superiors in order to save the girl's life (and some priceless Chinese treasures as well.)
The movie is easy-to-swallow fluff, breezy and lightened by Jackie's charming performance. Chris Tucker is less easy to warm to, and the pair don't make as magical a duo as Jackie and Owen Wilson in "Shanghai Noon". It seems more like a Chirs Tucker vehicle featuring Jackie than a movie with equal billing for both stars. There's nothing slashy about their interaction either, except one funny moment where Jackie tries to give Chris a kiss for saving his life. The action is tame and too-short compared to Chan's HK standards, but still enough to wow those who haven't seen him action before.
If you think you don't like Jackie, or have never seen him before, this is an excellent movie to start with. Take him a little diluted before trying to swallow the unadulterated stuff!
SUMMARY:
Overall rating: B+ It's not one of Jackie's best, but it's a great "recruiter" movie.
Droolworthiness: B+ Jackie looks good in his snappy dark suit, but he's just too overdressed for this gal's taste!
Slashiness: D Jackie and Chris just don't have that kind of on-screen chemistry.
