Tricky Brains (Zheng gu zhuan jia, 1991)
Stephen Chow and Andy Lau are one of my favorite slashy duos. They just look fabulous together. And in this little crack-tastically bizarre film, they have some very nice moments together--including some SERIOUS liplock for reasons that would take me far too long to explain in this review. But there's no need, just sit back and enjoy it.
The plot? Well, as much as there is one, Stephen plays a "Tricks" expert hired to drive Andy insane by pretending to be his long-lost brother (and Ng Man Tat's long lost son) and generally acting stupid and crazy as only Stephen can. There are dance sequences, toilet humor, Ng Man Tat in drag and the scene that surely inspired the underwear pull in "Zoolander". It's all perfectly insane and, if you can get past the sort-of-brotherly dynamics, quite slashy.
SUMMARY:
Overall rating: A- Does it make much sense? No--but who cares!
Droolworthiness: A Stephen. Andy. They both are to-die-for here. Stephen needs to wear that Naked Suit more often.
Slashiness: A+ if only for the kiss scene--and what else does one need?
Action: C It's not an action film, though there's plenty of physical humor, dancing, and all-around silliness.
